The Old Chain of Rocks Bridge, which was a part of Route 66 that connected north St. Louis with Madison, Ill., recently had lights installed so that it looks like “a string of pearls” at night from nearby Interstate 270. The bridge, which is not open for vehicular traffic but for cyclists and runners, will remain closed at night.

Well, that title isn’t exactly right. Emily Priddy of Tulsa, who is eastern vice president of the Oklahoma Route 66 Association, is running for herself first. She challenged herself to run a 26.2-mile marathon, and she’s on her way. If Route 66 can benefit from her efforts, all the better.

Emily didn’t start running regularly until last year. She began keeping an online journal of musings on her workouts, her life and her faith. I encourage you to read it all; there’s a lot of good writing there.

Emily recently completed a 20-mile training run. She’s entering in the 15K race in the popular Tulsa Run this weekend. But the big event on her calendar is the 26.2-mile Oklahoma Marathon on Tulsa’s Riverparks Trail on Nov. 19.

She’s also running to raise money for the Oklahoma Route 66 Association’s preservation fund. The association is a nonprofit group, so donations are tax-deductible. If you want to make a lump-sum donation upon her completion of the marathon, you can. If you want to donate money by the mile, you can. One individual already has pledged to donate $1 per mile from her training runs and the actual running events. Just e-mail her at sundayjohn66 (at) mac.com to the get the details on how you can.
