The Route 66 town of St. Robert, Mo., decided to participate in the National Scenic Byway program and is applying for a $1.3 million grant, reports The Pulaski County Democrat.
The city would use the funds to install a Trail of Tears Interpretive site and fitness trail, working with the National Historic Trail System of Santa Fe, N.M. The area is in the northern route of the “Trail of Tears, in which Cherokee Indians were forcibly marched to Oklahoma in 1837-39.
The city also wants to tie in the connection with the history of Route 66.
“We also hope to incorporate in the trail, the original road of Route 66 so people will be able to actually physically walk down Route 66, Heard said.
