If you’re traveling Route 66 with your mutt and roll into Kingman, Ariz., there’s a place where both of you can stretch your legs — Lewis Kingman Park at 2201 E. Andy Devine Ave.

It’s an off-leash park for dogs. And it has a historic link to the Mother Road, reports the Kingman Daily Miner.

“It was constructed by the Arizona Highway Department as a rest area when Route 66 was in its heyday,” said Darel Fruhwirth, director of the Kingman Parks and Recreation Department.

“We see hundreds of visitors there each year. Senior citizens stop to tell stories about the park they remember when they were youngsters traveling with their parents.”

The Off-Leash Recreational Facility opened three years ago. A second expanded area for dogs under 30 pounds is scheduled to open in late September, Fruhwirth said.

And a new study indicates that by 2023, traffic along the Mother Road in Kingman will jump to 38,000 vehicles a day, says the Kingman Daily Miner.

The population of the town also will more than double, from about 35,000 now to 77,000.

The study predicts Route 66, state route 66, Airway Avenue and U.S. 93 and Stockton Hill Road will absorb the most congestion, with the largest increase expected to be on Airway Avenue.

I know folks are lovin’ the “Cars” soundtrack and Rascal Flatts’ pretty good version of “Life Is a Highway.” But it’s worth remembering Tom Cochran’s original from 1992, which is pretty swell, too.

Here it is:

UPDATE: Rascal Flatts’ version for “Cars” can be seen here. And the link to the Cochran video has been fixed.

The Pontiac (Ill.) Daily Leader has the details about the Route 66 Antique Tractor Roadshow on Aug. 12-13 that runs on the Mother Road from Airport Road in Normal to downtown Dwight.

However, I don’t see any tractor-tipping events on the schedule. ;)
