  • Margaret is traveling down Route 66 and has a blog about it, getyourkicks.
  • Jerome Prophet has been posting pictures of window murals from the International Route 66 Mother Road Festival in Springfield, Ill.
  • Brent’s Blog is doing a Route 66 trip to Vegas.
  • For you cheapskates out there, Jhariman has a few downloads from the “Cars” movie soundtrack. I’ll bet RIAA lawyers will be knocking on Jhariman’s door soon.
  • Deb W at Sola Fide — Justified by Faith Alone in Christ has pictures from the dizzying top of the Sandia Mountains near Albuquerque and the city’s Nob Hill district.
  • It’s chili pepper season in New Mexico. Janet Ann of Out in the Middle of Somewhere even got a photo of a fellow roasting chilis on old 66 in Albuquerque. She says the aromas around the city this time of year are heavenly.

Own a big piece of a Route 66 hotel September 23, 2006

The La Posada de Albuquerque is undergoing renovations before it reopens early next year. Unfortunately, its front desk has gotta go, so it’s for sale on Craigslist for $5,000.

It may sound like a bargain, and it indeed is a nice-looking reception desk. But it’s not historic, as it was built in the 1980s. Also, the thing is solid oak and is 25 feet long and seven feet tall. It’s not going easy or inexpensive to move.

But I bet some high-end motel in a destination area like Santa Fe will snap it up.

Storm threat causes cancellations at festival September 23, 2006

The threat of severe storms persuaded organizers at the International Route 66 Mother Road Festival in Springfield, Ill., to pull the plug on the scheduled entertainment for Friday evening, reported the Springfield Journal-Register.

Even though the storms that hit Springfield that evening weren’t too bad, it was probably the right decision. There were reports of flooding and hail in Sherman. There also was hail and heavy rain at the Illinois State Fair grounds. Both are just north of the festival area, and that’s cutting it too close.

But the cruise went on as scheduled, with about 550 cars participating.

Weather conditions still look iffy for Saturday, but at least severe weather is probably out of the picture. And Sunday looks like it’s going to be cool and mild.

Still the same, and that’s good September 23, 2006

Columnist Amanda St. Amand of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch writes a very nice column about Scotty’s Route 66 Bar & Grill in Hamel, Ill.

If anything, the historic establishment has become even more welcoming to Route 66 travelers since Pat and Jim Allen, formerly of California, bought it a few years ago. But the main reason Scotty’s is treasured is because it remains a neighborhood bar that’s been serving three generations of local customers.

One-sixteenth of a mile of downtown Beale Street in the Route 66 town of Kingman, Ariz., will be the site of drag-racing today — everything from street-legal vehicles to alcohol-fueled monsters, according to the Daily Miner.

It’s a big deal. The organizer is expecting 10,000 spectators for the event, and proceeds will go toward building an indoor motor sports facility in the region.
