The Daily Oklahoman reported today that historic Round Barn in Arcadia, Okla., is receiving a $21,000 in repairs, including repainting.

Here’s a picture I took last weekend of the painting crew at work:

With two stories on one day from Arcadia, it appears a certain Oklahoma City newspaper may have been reading this site.

The Daily Oklahoman has a good story today about the progress of Pops, the distinctive convenience store under construction on Route 66 in Arcadia, Okla.

The store is the brainchild of Chesapeake Energy CEO Aubrey McClendon and Oklahoma City architect Rand Elliott.

The story goes over a lot of information already reported here, except for the fact Pops will likely be open by July.

Also, here’s a photo of the construction site that I took last weekend.

On the 80th anniversary of Route 66 on Saturday, the Historical Society of the Crescenta Valley toured by bus the last few miles of the Mother Road in the Los Angeles region. It was led by local Route 66 expert Scott Piotrowski.

Here’s the story, reported by the La Canada Valley Sun in La Canada Flintridge, Calif.

Wow, that was quick.

The Route 66 Heritage Foundation, based in Lincoln, Ill., already has secured a loan to begin its efforts to shore up the long-closed The Mill restaurant and lounge on Route 66 in Lincoln, according to the Lincoln Courier. The group also is about to get take over ownership of the property.

It was only weeks ago that the building was about to meet the wrecking ball and its owner going to jail because he was in contempt of court. Now both things have been averted.

The group hopes to eventually convert the historic building into a tourism center and gift shop.

Tulsa blogger Michael Bates spent a rather eventful evening on Route 66 — the same day as the road’s 80th anniversary and his birthday. He encountered a few people who should be familiar to Route 66 fans, including a certain VW driver.

Go read the whole thing. It’s really good.
