The Route 66 town of Tucumcari, N.M., has applied for the state’s last remaining permit for a horse-racing track and casino that would be on the Mother Road, reports the Quay County Sun.

The ownership would be a joint effort between the county, Tucumcari and the nearby towns of House, San Jon and Logan.

The projected $40 million project — with no taxes involved — would be on 250 acres on Route 66 between a Kmart store and a Holiday Inn.

The newspaper said the project would be modeled after SunRay Park in Farmington.

Go for it, Tucum needs something like this to stay alive. This will so boost the economy and activity in this little town. I’m sure some will oppose this idea but thnk of it as a great place for visitors to come to Tucumcari and spend money. If this is the last permit, get it if possible.. Amarillo has tried to build a track on I-40 and faild for the past 5 years but there are many race horse owners in the near west Texas area along with hundreds if not thousands of race fans. I think horse racing is a great sport and a great way to spend a saturday afternoon. It’s exciting even if you don’t bet. The track in Farmington if you havent been there is awsome. I hope this little town gets this in their near future.

I pray this goes threw, I graduated and left Tucumcari and joined the military in 2001 due to no future in Tucumcari. However the rumors flying about the Ethonol Plant and the Cattle Farms, Casino and Horse Track, redeeming Downtown makes me want to go back and possibally raise my kids there. The people in Tucumcari are loyal to the town. And they need something back. No one is going anywhere so give them something back, something to do, somewhere to work. Anyone ever gets more information please contact me.
