Riders wanted April 2, 2007

Roger Kramer’s Cycling Blog, based in my old stomping grounds of St. Louis’ metro-east area, has alerted me that the League of Illinois Bicyclists will mark National Trails Day by traversing all 369 miles of the Route 66 Trail in Illinois.
The big event, called Route 66 Trail-Breaking, is June 2. There are 14 legs, ranging from 15 to 50 miles. Bicycle riders will converge in six Illinois towns at noon, where ceremonies will be held. The towns where cyclers will meet up are Joliet, Springfield, Bloomington, Staunton, Edwardsville and Pontiac.
Kramer wrote:
In an recent e-mail, LIB Executive Director Ed Barsotti told me that there’s been great response to the ride in the Chicago area, but that riders are needed for the segments of the ride leading to ceremonies in Edwardsville and Staunton.

Pops of Arcadia documentary April 2, 2007

Here’s a short documentary about the building of the Pops convenience store on Route 66 in Arcadia, Okla., complete with a 66-foot-tall pop bottle.
Interviewed are Route 66 historian Jim Ross, who lives near Arcadia, and Pops architect Rand Elliott of Oklahoma City.
On a related note, I recently e-mailed Chesapeake Energy CEO Aubrey McClendon, who is the brains behind Pops, and asked when it would open. He replied that he was shooting for a Memorial Day weekend opening, but it was “going to be close” on whether that time frame is attainable.
