The City of Albuquerque’s Landmarks and Urban Conservation Commission has deferred a decision on whether to again designate the historic El Vado Motel on Route 66 a city landmark until Sept. 12.
The decision was scheduled to be made during the commission’s regular meeting on Wednesday.
The city has been in negotiations for months with El Vado owner Richard L. Gonzales to reach a settlement regarding the property. The delay in the landmarks decision indicates that the negotiations are ongoing.
More signs, please July 13, 2007

Rod Harsh of Visit66.com in Carterville, Mo., told the city council of nearby Carthage that the city and southwest Missouri in general needs more signs to help guide travelers on Route 66, reported the Carthage Press.
Rod Harsh, who has a Route 66 Welcome Center in Carterville, said that people from as far away as Australia, Ireland, Italy and Germany came into his place of business and roughly 50 percent say they missed the turns into Carthage to follow the famous road. [...]
“If they mark the turns, a lot more people would see Carthage,” he said. “It’s such a simple thing. I don’t know why Joplin doesn’t have it. Webb City doesn’t have it either.”
Route 66 directional signs are in Missouri, but they are sometimes are stolen and aren’t replaced in a timely manner.
Harsh also said that Carthage “is in perfect position” to host the National Route 66 Festival in 2010. However, I think nearby Joplin may have a better shot at it.
