Here’s a clip of the Rolling Stones performing Bobby Troup’s “Route 66″ during a Charlotte concert in 1999. Except for some wobbling in the middle, it’s a pretty decent audience video.

The Bristow Firestone Service Station at 321 N. Main, aka Route 66, in Bristow, Okla., was added to the National Register of Historic Places on Sept. 6.
I was passing through town today, so I shot photos of it.

As you can see, the sign pole is still standing, even if the sign is long gone.
Here are other details of the building. Check out the multi-colored bricks and the nice detail on the windows:

According to the Bristow tourism site, the Firestone station was built between 1924 and 1929.
Even though the building is well-maintained, I’m not sure what it’s being used for. I did see a pickup truck in the parking lot, advertising a range hood business, however.
Peter Fonda’s gear from “Easy Rider” will be auctioned September 16, 2007

Actor Peter Fonda is auctioning some of the props he used during the filming of the famed 1969 movie, “Easy Rider,” according to Heritage Auctions in Dallas. Part of the film was shot on Route 66.
Among the props is the flag on the back of his “Captain America” jacket that Fonda wore while motorcycling with co-stars Dennis Hopper and Jack Nicholson during the film. The estimate on the flag is $50,000 and up.
According to the auction house:
“Along with the flag, we’ll also present the D.O.D. badge that Fonda wore throughout the film, as well as his prototype gold Rolex. The watch was not a prop, it actually belonged to Fonda, who had purchased it as a reward to himself for finishing the screenplay for Easy Rider. In the movie, when you see Fonda toss the watch away, he’s actually throwing a replica, not wanting to damage the original, which he wore throughout the rest of the movie and which can be seen briefly in the opening, pre-credit sequence.”
“One of the things that set Easy Rider apart from virtually all other movies of its time was its soundtrack,” Norwine said. “Featuring contemporary hits from the likes of Steppenwolf, the Byrds, the Jimi Hendrix Experience, and Roger McQuinn, the album was a phenomenal success and redefined the way popular music was used in motion pictures. Fonda received a Gold Record Award from the RIAA, commemorating 500,000 copies sold, an award we’re proud to offer to the collecting public for the very first time.”
Detailed photos of Fonda’s items can be seen here.
Here are the opening credits of “Easy Rider,” which features several Route 66 scenes in the Southwest:

Filmmaker Darryl Kinson produced a 22-minute short film, “The Caretaker,” that was shot entirely at Roy’s on Route 66 in Amboy, Calif.
You can see the trailer for the film here, which is described as a thriller shot for $3,000 over a couple weekends at Roy’s. Longtime roadies will readily recognize many parts of Roy’s here.
Kinson said in a message:
My goal is to submit it to some festivals first and then make it readily available. I’m glad to hear about your interest in route 66, the discovery for me was a fantastic experience.

An uncredited travel writer for the Chicago Sun-Times tries to follow the mantra of Slow Travel and take a trip on Route 66 from the Windy City to Springfield, Ill.
The writer found rewards in particular at the Ambler-Becker Texaco Station in Dwight, which now is a visitors center, and the Cozy Dog Drive-In in Springfield.

California artist Anthony Ross will have his artwork of Route 66 scenes on display from Sept. 20 to Nov. 1 at Redlands Community College in El Reno, Okla.
Ross e-mailed me an image above of one of his mixed-media compositions — a neon sign at the long-gone Coral Court Motel in St. Louis — that will be exhibited.
On Nov. 1, Ross and author Michael Wallis will be at a luncheon presentation at the college. Go to this site for more details about the event.
New murals in Tulsa September 16, 2007

On Friday, while driving on Southwest Boulevard, aka Route 66, in Tulsa, I saw some people painting murals on a wall at Goodwill Industries.
I didn’t have my camera with me at the time, but I shot a photo Saturday after the murals were completed.

From left, the scenes are a Goodwill logo, a west Tulsa oil well, a United Way logo, a Route 66 shield, a Red Fork Main Street logo, a train in west Tulsa and another Goodwill logo.
Nicely done.
