Jim Conkle of the California Route 66 Preservation Foundation announced Monday that he will be embarking on a Route 66 Caravan to mark attractions on the road in summer 2008, similar to the one he led in 2003.

Hampton Inn was the sponsor nearly five years ago. It will participate, but won’t be a major sponsor. The Route 66 Pulse newspaper will be a major partner.

Conkle will find some new places to place “Roadside Attraction” signs. The signs, he said, will be similar in appearance to the one placed in 2003.

The caravan also will stop in Litchfield, Ill., during the Route 66 Festival in June.

The event is still in the planning stages; more details will be given out later.

This is a video made by students at St. Martin of Tours Parish Catholic School in St. Louis. A few of the images, coupled with the music, hit me hard. You might find it affecting, also.

The music is “Our Town,” the Oscar-nominated song written by Randy Newman and sung by James Taylor for the “Cars” movie soundtrack.

Images were supplied by longtime roadie Joe Sonderman.
