Mark Rahner of the Seattle Times spent phone time with “Route 66″ television series co-star George Maharis, who is plugging the DVD re-releases of the show.

It’s a good, wide-ranging interview, including a few details about Maharis’ Playgirl shoot and his other non-”Route 66″ work. If you want to check out the phone interview I did with Maharis a few months ago, go here.

I am a George Maharis fan and 62 now. I joined the Marine Corps knowing George was also a Marine. I have owned 2 new Corvettes. I invited George to my wedding 38 years ago. He sent me a nice card telling me that he was flattered when he lived in FL with his mother. I have never met him but would love to shake his hand!

George,
My father was in the “Even Stones have Eyes”. He was Cotton Guidry the blind Albino that the story was originally written on. My familys station wagon is in the background on some of the walking scenes.
I wonder if you remember him and what your memories are of him?
I saw him at age six on the original air date and again in 2007
I thought that meant he was equally as famous as you. Still believe .lol

please do respond and let me know what all you remember.

Mr Maharis, I think It’s pretty cool how many fans you have nowadays. I was born in 63 and just this year I’ve learned so much about you. Sorry I took so long. Enjoyed Route 66, I purchased the complete set. I even heard your songs and enjoyed them as well. I read the “Chat with George Maharis on line and I’m here to say that If you made an appearance for any special event, I’m sure you would be well received. I bet If you and Marty had a Reunion, there would be more viewers than the final episode of MASH. Hope this gets to you? Love to hear from you.

Where can we write to George?? or email?

Ron - May 8, 2009

I’m not aware that he even has a computer, Mel.

7. Mark - May 15, 2009

I saw an episode of Route 66 this year. I remembered the series, but when I saw it this time, I noticed one particular shot, a left side profile of George, it looked like it was lovingly drawn by Tom of Finland. I immediately went to the computer and found out the beautiful truth. I really think that the way the shots are setup, there is often homage to Tom of Finland. It is a shame that his career hasn’t produced more work because he is a very talented actor. I watch Route 66 regularly now, and I don’t beleive that a series like it could be produced today.

I, too, would like to know how to communicate with George. I had his address (and his phone No.) on Mulholland Dr for years, but my last letter was returned. When he was at the Dinner Theater in Addison, Texas (Dallas), we met and every time he returned, he would let me know he was to be in town and we would visit each time. Route 66 was always a favorite, no matter what, I never missed it. So to meet him was a jewel in my life I really look back on and would like to visit with him again someday. He actually autographed a picture that has been lost in my moving around, I would love to have another!!

What a great show Route 66 was. It sure would be very difficult to replicate such a masterpiece today. Maharis and Milner were such a great pair. I just wished Maharis never got ill and continued in the series. It would have lasted 10 years. It would have been terrific if they had made a movie in the theaters back then. I’m sure it would have been very successful.

LADYLEO- I remember Mr.George Maharis on Route 66 he had it all looks, talent, and charisma. I was truely upset because the show had to end. I was very young in the 60’s, now I am older and I still continue remembering him after all these years. I would say that he made a lasting impression on me as an actor. I am now in the entertainment business acting.Thank you Mr. Maharis, God Bless you and keep you in good health.

Sincerely,
LL

luisa -I have loved him since I was 14, years old. He has the most beautiful face I have ever seen. I am many years older today. I would like to write, or e-mail him. One of my biggest wish in my life time.
