June 2 Cuba, MO Summer Sesquicentennial KIck-Off along Rt. 66
Amanda’s birthday bash kicks-off summer fun
Cuba, MO Amanda Jamison may have lost out on having the new town named after her in 1857, but she will be remembered during Amanda’s Birthday Bash on Saturday, June 2. To kick-off the summer sesquicentennial season, Viva Cuba plans an afternoon and evening of celebratory activities in the Uptown Historic District. Buchanan and Filmore Streets will be closed for special activities, and there will be activities along NW Main.
The afternoon features a Lion’s Club sponsored Classic Car Show centered around the Washington St. Peoples Bank parking lot. Lion’s Club will also be serving BBQ near their newly renovated den. During the afternoon, Main Street Bakery is planning a community birthday cake.
During the afternoon, with teams competing to finish first, an Amazing Race will begin with teams performing certain feats and gathering designated information in the area. “Who’s Amanda” will have contestants vying for the title of Amanda. Donahoe’s Bluegrass Band will perform bluegrass favorites during the late afternoon, and Frisco’s will offer horse drawn surrey rides of the historic/mural district from 2:00 until dusk.
As the afternoon moves into evening, the Libations Beverage tent will open with specialty drinks. Hometowner singer/song writer Leslie Sanazaro, presently of St. Louis, will perform a set of her music. The Pseudo Blues Band, featuring our local drumming dentist Don Fuchs, will ramp up by playing an evening of hits from 8 to 10 o’clock.
Musical performances are free during the day and evening. Planning is continuing for the day, and event times will be published later. It is hoped that merchants will participate with special sales or displays of their own, and that locals and visitors will turn out to see the improvements that have been made in the historic area. Mark your calendar and bring a lawn chair for an afternoon of family fun, and evening of music and dancing under the stars.

Who’s Amanda?
Before Cuba was surveyed in 1857, George Jamison operated a store and post office just west of the present Cuba. It was called Amanda after his wife. Anticipating the Pacific Railroad reaching the area, surveyors Trask and Ferguson platted a new town, consisting of 32 blocks, near Amanda. The question was whether to keep the name of Amanda or give the new town its own identity. Some favored the familiar Amanda while others came up with the name of Cuba after the island, which had been fighting Spain for its independence and had been visited by 49ers, who had noted its beauty. Legend has it that a stick was thrown and if it fell one way, the name Amanda would remain. If it fell the over way, Cuba would be the town’s name. We all know the outcome of that fateful stick.
The Cuba business district grew facing the railroad. After Rt. 66 was built through the town, business development expanded to the north of the tracks along the new road. Because the of the influence of the railroad and the Rt. 66, both are featured on the Sesquicentennial Coin that was produced by the Cuba Lion’s Club. Today, the Rt. 66 Scenic Byway brings many visitors from all over the world to town to view Cuba’s outdoor murals and visit other area attractions. Due to a Community Block Grant and citizens putting their money where their hearts are, the uptown area is experiencing a renaissance, which Viva Cuba would like to showcase during the June 2 Amanda’s Birthday Bash.

10. Dilip D'Souza - October 14, 2007

How much of the southwest portion of 66 (CA/AZ/NM/TX/OK) is driveable in the winter months — specifically, Dec/Jan? I’m planning to drive along it this coming winter. Any events in that time? Dilip D’Souza, dilip.fb@gmail.com, Bombay India

11. Ron - October 14, 2007

As for events in December and January, there are few except for local Christmas festivals, which are nice.

As for weather at that time, it’s unpredictable. Generally speaking, most days from Oklahoma to California that time of year might be cold, but certainly driveable. But you will occasionally have snowstorms in all of those states, especially in the higher elevations. So it’s smart to pay attention to the local weather forecasts each day and plan accordingly.

17. Jim HInckley - April 11, 2008

I was wondering who will be attending the Fun Run in Kingman this year. It would be great to put a face to the names I see here and in comments.
If you have questions aboth the event I see Ron has a link to the Route 66 Arizona Association. Additionaly, I posted the official poster on my blog - http://www.route66chronicles.blogspot.com
At the event I should be easy to find. I will either be driving Barney the Wonder Truck (a 1968 Dodge Adventurer) or the family truckster (a 1988 Ford LTD Crown Victoria Country Squire station wagon).
The later has a unique camo paint scheme. The clear coat is gone and many years in the desert has left it looking like a multi hued blue barge. Hence the camo comment - I can park this beast in any lake in the country and no one would notice.
